Exploring the Real Faces of Globalization | Cato Institute

Cato Institute Vice President Scott Lincicome explains his team’s motivation behind the new Faces of Globalization video series and Cato’s ongoing Defending Globalization project. He also summarizes the series’ first three installments and the essential humanity of everyday commerce that just so happens to cross political borders.

From Textile Town to Ghost Town to Car Town : West Point, Georgia | Cato Institute

Tiny West Point, Georgia, was once an American “textile town” crippled by globalization. But today, the very same economic forces that challenged West Point decades ago are fueling its rebirth—and supporting the lives of thousands of American workers in the process. The region’s evolution shows that the global economy’s story doesn’t end after a disruptive event; it’s constantly changing—and usually for the better.

More Than Just a “Cheap T-Shirt”: Guatemala Textiles | Cato Institute

A common criticism of globalization is that its costs aren’t worth the “cheap T‑shirts” we get in return. But those shirts help American families stretch their budgets and serve as a lifeline for millions of the world’s poorest people. We traveled to an apparel factory in Guatemala to tell some of these people’s stories and to show how globalization has lifted more than a billion humans out of abject poverty since 2000.

Globalization For Fun and Profit : The Digital Gaming Economy | Cato Institute

Digital trade is globalization’s hottest area today, and gaming is a huge part of that trend. Millions of people regularly compete, collaborate, and conduct business in massive virtual worlds that seamlessly cross international borders. They are the new, fresh faces of 21st-century globalization, and they’re part of an industry that’s more than three times the size of music and movies combined.

The Innocence Project | Cato Institute

Since 1992, the Innocence Project has fought to exonerate the wrongfully convicted and implement reforms designed to reduce the number of wrongful convictions and impose accountability on a system that regularly produces them. Since then, the Innocence Project has freed 232 people who were falsely convicted and collectively spent 3,555 years behind bars for crimes that they did not commit.

Qualified Immunity: Justice Denied | Cato Institute

Sam Pauly and his brother were attempting to scare off intruders around their home in a remote part of New Mexico when they fired warning shots into the air. Moments later, Sam was dead from a bullet fired by state police who never announced themselves. Sam’s family tells the story, and Clark Neily explains how qualified immunity has prevented accountability for Sam’s murder.

Foster Care and Race

Should a child's race have to match the race of his or her adoptive parents? While the law says "no", some activists say "yes". AEI's Naomi Schaefer Riley explains the looming issues with the courts and policy through the experience of a family in Mississippi.

Foster Care and the Courts

How do you define "family"? For some foster children, blood relatives are merely obstacles that separate them from a safe, permanent home. AEI's Naomi Riley uses the experience of a family in Arizona to explain that while the law is clear, the courts can be more-than-deferential to abusive and irresponsible biological parents.
